How do I keep my Gardenia alive?

I went out and bought a gardenia plant. Flowers not sprouted yet, and I have a terrible with trying to keep the flowers / live plants, but I saw this plant out of my garden nursing Grandparents and immediately fell in love with her. So I went out and bought medium size. I did not think the fact that I live in a condo 3rd floor. I put the plant on the porch in the sun, but its screening in a way that it will not get any rain, I know I have to water, but how much and how often? The little note that came with it do not tell me how to take care of it though. I live in South Florida so the weather I think it should be good right? Also, I'm seeing little black ants flocking to him and now I'm going slightly neurotic, like an overprotective mother and I freak out every time I see them crawling everywhere, but I do not know if the ants are good for the plant or not? Does anyone have any suggestions?

All I can tell you is if you believe in the power of prayer, now is the time to exercise their belief.
