What should I do with an endangered species being raised in a garden?
I have been cultivating a large number of specimens of an unusual plant for a number of years that I received from another gardener. After doing some research, I have strong reasons to believe it could be a federal endangered species listed. I have no idea if it was an endangered species when it entered the culture, I do not see listed in any catalog of exotic plants or unusual and I checked dozens of them. What should I do? Clone them and plant more? " I do not even know if having the plant is legal. It sounds crazy, but I might have to destroy them If a crime is being in possession of the plants. I do not know exactly how this is handled legally. Does anyone know what the law is on this?
I recommend you call the DNR and explain the situation to them. I'm not sure, but I think you can get into some serious problem to have an endangered species, without a license. If you explain what you have to DNR they can go out and take a look and they know what to do from there. This is http://www.michigan.gov/dnr the site. They also have a list of species endandered there for you to confirm. Key Furthermore, there is ID you can use to find out what kind plant it is. He'll ask about things like if the leaves are opposite each other, as in the tree http://www.extension.umaine.edu/mainetreeclub/images/factsheets/RedMaple.jpg red maple (look at the agency and see how the buttons form a V) or are alternet each other, like paper birch http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/pubs/plantsci/trees/eb38-05. jpg (Notice the leaves do not line up on both sides, like the others did) Hope this helps a little. ^ _ ^
