How does someone become a horticulturist?
I've been looking at the University of Guelph, Conestoga College as well. U of G offers a diploma and the college offers a Retail Garden Cert. I spoke with someone at the garden center and he mentioned that there are two parts, a horticulture. part of science and 2. firms (design vs botany) Can anyone give me some tips?
I am a Master Gardener in Ontario and took some correspondence courses in UG. They cover science and business. The diploma program is bigger and horticulturist will cover plant growth, soil analysis, lawn care, fertilization, pest control, the propagation of seeds and seedlings, plant identification, pruning, Garden Design and how to start and run a business. It also includes an internship (working field). Gardeners can be used by plant breeders, nurseries, garden centers, garden maintenance unfamiliar with the certification program retail, but I suspect that is more limited to working in retail is not the center of the garden nurseries or gardens attacked. What is your career goal? Take a careful look at the course presents and talk to the consultants for the program students at both institutions to know what type of employment of graduates of each program typically find. Then choose the program that comes closest to your goal. It may be helpful to contact someone doing the job you want to do and ask what kind of training they had and which program to recommend.
