Gardening Plants Flowers

What plants / flowers grow well in New England, specifically Maine?
I'm looking to start a Small Garden, but I do not know what the plants go well in the climate of Maine. I looked online and have not been able to find a list of flowers that can survive here. I do not want a garden, just flowers and shrubs.
