How do I train my cat to use a litter tray indoors or outdoors?

I have one year old cat of 18 years which is more than happy to do their business out of our garden (he used indoor litter pans before, but still prefer to go out). As its never a pleasant experience to clear the number 2 before doing any gardening, I thought I'd try it with an outdoor litter tray. Although he used a couple of times (three weeks), it still continues to use the garden. He would often go to him and have a look inside, so do not know its existence. Can anyone offer any suggestions, or am I expecting too much of a senior cat stuck in their ways?

i wouldnt expect much from him, if he uses the pan occasionally, just keep it in the same place and he can use it all the time. Given its age advanced, I would just make the most of it and pamper it a bit. When he is gone you will lose him and wish he was back in his pooping garden.
