Organic Gardening – A Growing Trend

In the last decade and a half, organic products have achieved almost mainstream status. Always that organic produce was a specialty item of luxury in some grocery stores in the early 1990s, today's supermarkets commonly offer organically produced items.

An upward spiral is happening: Organics have become more available and more affordable. The result is that a greater proportion of people buying products organic. This leads to a greater general awareness of the benefits for people and the environment of organic production.

Greater awareness the benefits contributes to an increased demand for organic products. Increased demand encourages producers to produce an even more organic products. Increased production of organic results is increasingly available and affordable … and upward, the trend goes.

During the 1990s, sales of organic products dramatically increased the rate of over 20 percent every year. By the early 21st century, sales of organics have passed the mark of U.S. $ 9 billion. Today, in 2006, the majority of U.S. consumers (7 of 10) buy organic food at least for awhile.

These statistics are encouraging signs that the production Organic is here to stay. This is good news for the welfare of people and the environment.

Fifteen years ago, organic farmers may have to explain to clients in a farmer's market that the label "organic" means. Today, most people understand that for a product to be labeled as organic had to be grown without using synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or hormone supplements.
