Your kids will love the feeling of accomplishment they receive as they see their seeds germinate into seedlings, or pick their vegetables first. Caring for the garden will give them a chance to take responsibility. And the kids will be happy to eat their own own fruit and vegetables as part your healthy diet.
Involve children in the early stages of much of its garden – the planning phase. Include interesting plants, fruits and vegetables that your children like to eat. Plant vegetables that are easy to grow and have a high success rate. Try to incorporate interesting structures for the garden, such as growing beans, squash and cucumber vines in tents made of sticks tied together. Plan an imaginative scarecrow for your garden that kids can dress and decorate.
Giving children in the garden guidance, showing them how to care for plants and water and build their confidence, giving them their own responsibilities. Remember that children want gardening is fun, too. They will want to dig, explore and discover in the garden. Children love to get dirty!
Security is always an issue important for family activities, and gardening is no exception. Here are some safety tips for gardening with children:
- Keep chemicals away from kids. The best way to garden with children is, naturally, without chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides.
- Provide the children with their own "kid-sized" tools to work with
- See sources of children around water
- Learn about the plants and avoid poisonous plants. Also watch for any potential allergic reaction
- Work with your kids in the garden. Supervision and working together makes gardening a family activity much more special
- Dress appropriately to protect children from exposure to sun and heat
Gardening is also an excellent way to teach your children about health and nutrition. They will learn that the delicious fruits and vegetables that helped grow are full of vitamins and minerals that help keep them strong and healthy. Of course, healthy eating habits start at an early age is beneficial for everyone.
Being active in the garden and eat a diet full of nutritious garden produce is something that will benefit the whole family. Gardening together is a great alternative for indoor activities like watching TV or playing video games. Children will love being outdoors, and have pride in growing their own food to share with friends and family.
