Organic Composting

Making compost from garden and household waste is one of the best things any gardener can do. It's easy and costs very little in time or effort.

Make compost helps reduce pollution and reduce the landfill! Your plants will grow healthy and happy and you look at it will save money on fertilizer as well. Our local council in Manchester has now in brown bins for us to add leaves and the grass and other compost which is then emptied every two weeks, once reduced to less than half its size.

What is composting?

Garden guides often describe composting as a way of recycling natures.

Composting is certainly a natural way of recycling, harnessing natural processes, not machines and synthetic chemicals, but it takes people to do it.

maintenance of soil is the heart of organic growing food: no plants, feed the soil – the plants look after themselves. The extremely complex subject of soil maintenance can fortunately be summed up in one word: composting.

A hole in the stinky end of the garden full of rotting kitchen waste and flies buzzing around. This is what the compound is not. No smells, no flies, spite of catering is welcome.

Compost is not just decayed organic matter. Composting is applied microbiology at its most complex, involving the interaction of thousands and thousands of different species of microorganisms in a highly complex ecosystem.
What can I compost?

If he rot can be composed, but some items should be avoided. Some things, like grass mowings and soft young weeds, rot quickly. They act as activators or Rotters hotter, getting the composting started, but its decay will to a smelly mess. Recycle your plant, kitchen and garden waste, turning it into fertilizer.

older plants and harder is slower rot but gives body to the finished product – and usually becomes the volume of a compost pile. Woody items decay very slowly because they are best chopped or grated first, if appropriate.

The brown box or container is not an absolute necessity, as you can composting do perfectly well in a lot of free standing, provided it is sufficiently large. You'll see later why this may be an inconvenience. Assuming then we need to do a container, we are faced with many choices.

Why not make or buy a box of compost? They're generally cheaper to buy, and are available in wood or recycled plastic (which could be in your local landfill). If you are interested you can combine it with a wormery or use a shredder that increases the amount of compostable waste. Do not eat dairy foods such as fertilizer, meat, bread etc as these attract flies and vermin.

How do I know when its done?

That depends. What was a heap of plant material, gradually, from bottom to top, turn into a heap of matter dark that looks like brown dirt. Finally, none of the items you put there will be recognizable. If you are using it out in the garden, some small pieces recognizable hurts – they'll finish composting in the garden. If you're using it for houseplants or to start seeds, its best to wait until your well finished so you need not attack the microbes fine rootlets of plants.

Dig in having a healthy garden, fertile and its fruit and vegetables can be organic. Do not assume the waste is harmless and bin it. Putting it in the landfill costs money and that will produce methane (a global warming gas), can also pollute the groundwater.

waste compost, often comprises about 20-30% of their total household waste and the impact on recycling is important.
