Chooks – The Organic Gardener's All-Rounder
Chooks (chickens) have been domesticated for many centuries. They originate from the tropical forests of Malaysia they like to air. Chooks are such easy animals to care for, can do great pets for children and are a valuable resource for the organic gardener.
You need to check with your local council to find out their rules. Some councils will not allow you to keep any poultry, while others, some even allow roosters.
Some benefits of keeping chooks:
– They give you beautiful, fresh eggs – daily
– Your leftovers will never again waste (reduce wastage)
– Provide you an excellent base fertilizer
– Dig on the soil (so you do not need)
– Reduce the number of insects, great for around your orchard
– Providing you with live entertainment
Requirements basic
* Dry, fox proof shelter
* A safe place to lay eggs and hatch chicks (if you have a rooster)
* A roosting perch outside land (about 20cm to allow bird)
* Layer pellets (or crumble for puppies) should become the majority of their diet.
Kitchen waste * are great for variety
* Wheat, corn or other grains should be offered occasionally, but not form the majority of their diet
* Birds do not have teeth, they swallow pebbles or grains to grind down food in their gizzards. They should have access to a supply of grains for this purpose.
* Never feed chocolate, coffee, avocado and rhubarb, which are toxic to chooks
* They should always have access to clean, fresh water.
If you do not plan to let your chooks outdoors in a garden during the day, they will be very happy if you give them a run outside where they will be able to scratch the ground and enjoy the sunshine.
I lock my chooks from the midday sun. Thus, they often put their eggs so far, so I do not have to go on an egg hunt every day! Old grass-gatherers engine lawn make big boxes – just the right size and they offer ventilation.
Liquid Fertilizer
manure Chook is an excellent base for a liquid fertilizer or to add to your compost pile. You never use it fresh, but also as chicken manure contains urine and will burn their crops.
To make a liquid fertilizer, put it inside a porous bag in a bucket and fill the bucket with water. After about three weeks, or you can use water in and around your plants, diluted to look like weak tea.
Chook manure for Compound
If you provide a bed of straw, hay or sawdust in the living rooms of his chook will turn it into compost material for you. They'll scratch it, add fertilizer and deliver it. You can add layers of organic matter to your compost pile or leave it to turn into a fine, dark substance.
