How to make your own garden first thing in the Making Garden is the selection of a site. Without choice, it means simply doing the best you can Wit
But now let's suppose it is possible to really choose just the right place for the garden. What should be chosen? The biggest factor is the sun. Nobody would have a corner North, unless it was absolutely forced upon him, because while the corners of the north for ferns, certain wild flowers, and begonias, are of little use as points in a garden in general.
If possible, choose the ideal spot a southern exposure. Here the sun is warm throughout the day. When the garden is therefore located the rows of vegetables and flowers should run north and south. Thus placed, the plants receive the sun's rays throughout the morning on the eastern side, and all afternoon, on the west side. You should not have with plants such unbalanced arrangement.
Suppose that the garden faces southeast. In this case the western sun is out the problem. In order to obtain the best distribution of sunlight run the lines northwest and southeast.
The idea is to get the most sunlight as evenly distributed as possible for the longest period of time. From the uneven growth of window plants it is easy enough to see the effect on plants of poorly distributed light. So if you use a little diagram remembering that you want the sun to shine part of the day on one side of the plants and part of another, you can handle any situation. The southern exposure gives the ideal case, because the sun gives half time nearly to each side. A northern exposure may mean a cut of almost all sunlight, while northeastern and southwestern places always get uneven distribution of sun rays, no matter how carefully this is planned.
The garden, if possible, should be planned on paper. The plan is great help when the real planting time comes. It saves time and unnecessary buying of seed.
spots New gardens are likely to be found in two conditions that are covered with grass or garbage. In large garden areas the ground is tilled and the sod turned shelter, but in small gardens remove the earth. Taking the grass in the best way is the next question. Game and off-line in place of the garden. The line gives an accurate and straight forward. Cut the edges with the spade all along the line. If the area is small, say four feet by eighteen or twenty years, this is an easy question. Such a close band can be checked off as a chessboard, the grass cut through with the spade, and easily removed. This could be done in two long strips cut lengthwise of the strip. When grass is cut through, roll it up like a roll of carpet.
But suppose the garden is great. Then, divide it into strips a foot wide and take the grass as before. What should be done with the grass? Do not throw away for it is full of wealth, although not quite in available form. Then pack carpet of grass side down one square on the other. Let her rot and weather conditions. When rotted makes a good fertilizer. This cell decomposition vegetable matter is called a compost pile. Throughout the summer add any old green vegetable matter to it. In the fall put the autumn leaves on. Very good goodness is being fixed for another season.
Even when the garden is big enough to plow, I would choose the larger pieces of grass, rather than have them turned under. Go along the plowed area, select pieces of grass, stir well and pack them in a compost pile.
Mere spading the land is not enough. The soil is still left in pieces. Always as one spades one should break the big lumps. But even so the ground is not in shape for the planting. Earth must be very fine indeed to plant in, because seeds can get very close, in fact, fine particles of soil. But the large lumps leave large spaces which no tiny root hair can penetrate. The seed is dropped in a perfect waste when planted in chunks of land. A baby surrounded large pieces of steak that hunger. A seed among large pieces of land is in a similar situation. The spade never can do this work spraying soil. But the commission can. This is the value of the rake. It's a great break fixed, but will not do for large stones. If the soil still has large lumps in it take hoe.
Many people handle the hoe awkwardly. The main work of implementing this is to rid the soil of weeds and stir until the top surface. It is used in summer to form the roof of dust so valuable in retaining moisture in the soil. I always see people as if they were going to chop into atoms everything around you. Hoeing should never be as vigorous exercise like that. Spading is vigorous, hard work, but not weeding and cleaning.
After the nodules are broken use the rake to do good and good in bed. Now, much of the work is done.
