Container Gardening for Vegetables
Many areas of life do not have much space to plant gardens. One option is Container Gardening. Nutritious and fresh vegetables can be grown in pots on the porch, patio or window.
Crop Selection
Containers are ideal for almost all vegetables that thrive in a backyard garden. Plants that are specifically adapted for containers are peppers, green onions, tomatoes, beans, squash, radishes, parsley, cucumber, eggplant and beans. Carrots also grow well in containers if the container is deep enough (eight inches).
Great Soil For Container Gardening
Container-grown vegetables do best in soil made wood chips, sawdust, vermiculite, perlite, or a variety of other materials. The four most important criteria, regardless of soil mixture that is 1) be free of weed seeds and diseases, 2) can retain nutrients and moisture, 3) can drain well and 4) is light. Many products contain nutrients in the soil for fertilization is unnecessary.
Containers
You can use almost any container to plant their plants, including baskets, wooden boxes or containers specifically designed for container gardening. chives, parsley and herbs thrive in pots from six to 10 inches in size. Peppers, tomatoes and eggplant are more appropriate in larger containers.
Adequate drainage is very important for container growth. Put about an inch of gravel in the bottom of the container before adding soil. This will help improve drainage. If the container has drainage holes, drill them yourself – About 4.1 to 1 / 2 inch at the bottom.
Sowing and transplanting
You can buy transplants from your garden center or local nursery to put in your container, but you can also grow from seed to plant at home. Use a roasting pan to germinate their own seeds. Fill the pot with soil and plant the seeds to a depth of 4.1 to 1 / 2 inch.
Place the tray in a area that receives heat and sunlight appropriate about four to eight weeks before planting them in the final container. The general rule is to transplant the seeds once they show the first two or three true leaves. Be careful when transplanting, so you do not damage the root system.
Light
full sun is ideal for almost all vegetables. However, some plants may do well in partial shade: lettuce, greens, kale and spinach. Roots actually prefer more shade than those that bear fruit. One advantage to container growing is that you can move the containers as needed.
