Austin New Urban Village: Revitalizing the old airport
An area of Austin, which is undergoing revitalization is the old Mueller the airport area, near the intersection of Manor Road and Airport Boulevard in East Central Austin. This site offers residents and visitors alike many interesting opportunities. Housing is very affordable in the area including single family homes and duplexes, and apartment complexes are also several beautiful, but cheap. Since this area is a few miles from the campus of the University of Texas, is ideal for students and faculty members as well as downtown employees who are looking for a neighborhood that is affordable yet very close to downtown business and entertainment in the university area. Manor Road is home to many fine restaurants, including El Chile and El Gringo, both wonderful restaurants specializing in Mexican cuisine, and Hoover, a Southern-style restaurant specializing in barbecue and various other specialties Regional Texas. Eastside Cafe, a popular restaurant that specializes in natural and fresh from the garden of choices, is located on Manor Road just across the interstate and is very convenient to UT students, faculty and visitors to the area of the campus. The Eastside Cafe has a reputation for very fresh seafood and steaks and dishes tempting others. All of these restaurants have been visited by well known political visitors recently, including Bill Clinton's visit to Hoover's campaign to make in Austin with his wife Hillary and family.
The University of Texas sports facilities are also very close to the middle-east of Austin, Dish Faulk Field in particular, for the Longhorn baseball fans, and Royal Memorial Stadium, for Longhorn football fans. Both are sports facilities near the intersection Interstate 35 East and Martin Luther King Blvd, which parallels the little Manor Road, east of Interstate 35. The Erwin Center is also within walking distance, in Red River and Martin Luther King, west of the interstate.
Before closing in 1999, Mueller Airport was the oldest municipal airport in Texas, and that initially opened in 1930. After the new Bergstrom International Airport was established in South Austin, where former Bergstrom Air Force Base, Mueller Field closed to air traffic and is currently being redeveloped as an arts center, homes at affordable prices, and many other businesses and exciting attractions. The old airport site encompasses 711 acres of space, and is called "mixed use" development now, many films including related facilities. The site is home to the new complex Austin Film studios, including studios, sets, and various other commercial ventures associated with Austin thriving cinema, theater and arts communities. Many of the hangars Airport age were converted to use as studios for these new developments, and the area is ideal for this type of activity because it is such a large area and so conveniently located, but still very quiet and has a rural feel to it since it was not very developed or inhabited in the past, especially since that the airport has changed.
The site will eventually be home to 10,000 residents and has been referred to as an "urban village" with its proximity to major areas urban, but its small town flavor. The site will include, where appropriate, schools, shops, homes, apartment complexes, and several other entertainment companies and services. Beyond these exciting, revenue-generating ventures, the area is projected to include 140 acres of public spaces and 13 acres of walking and bike paths, making neighborhood very safe for pedestrians as well as offering immediate access to the system of fine mass transit Austin, Cap Metro bus lines.
Right across Manor Road from the airport entrance age is another attraction for fans of sports, the Morris Williams Golf Course, which is a golf course, eighteen hole public with green fees of twenty dollars or less in a year-round basis. This area is also very accessible for out of town visitors, since both Manor Road and Martin Luther King eventually intersect with U.S. Highway 183 when traveling east or northeast. U.S. 183 serves the metropolitan area of Austin as a loop around the eastern perimeter city, which is known as Ed Bluestein Blvd. It also intersects with Highway 290 East and Highway 71 East and Interstate 35, so it is very convenient to enter and out of the east-central community around the old Mueller Airport.
This area is sure to become a vital part of Austin in the very near future, and offers the best attractions and amenities now for all segments of the population, youth and adults
